International ministry

Internationals from many nations relocate to the Baton Rouge area. Our volunteers assist them with learning basic English and navigating a new culture.

  • Serve as a mentor.

  • Assist internationals with basic computer skills, filling out job applications, searching for employment opportunities, etc.

  • Serve as a reading coach.

  • Serve at international soccer practices and games.

  • Help internationals navigate conversational English and social customs.

Firm Foundations Tutoring

Firm Foundations is Istrouma's tutoring Ministry.  We work primarily with 4th and 5th graders at our "adopted" elementary school.  You don't need to be a teacher to participate.  All you need is a little patience and a big heart.

  • Tutor elementary-age kids.

  • Wednesdays, 6:00pm-7:00pm at Istrouma

ESL (English as a Second Language)

Istrouma offers free conversational adult English classes to internationals living in our area.  We provide the training you need to help others learn to quickly improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills.

  • Help non-native speakers learn English.

  • Wednesdays, 6:30pm-7:30pm at Istrouma

Local schools

  • Volunteers needed to serve at special events and ongoing ministry opportunities at Cedarcrest-Southmoor Elementary and Westdale Middle Schools.

  • Serve at teacher appreciation days, in beautification projects, by reading in classrooms, and more.

Open Table Foster Care Initiative

  • Open Table is a partnership between Istrouma and DCFS to build relationships with children aging out of foster care.

  • As an Open Table participant, you will build a relationship with a young adult, age 17-21 years, and assist them in navigating critical life experiences such as insurance, housing, finances, etc. with a team of 8-10 other volunteers.

Disability Ministry (partnership with Joni & Friends)

  • Be a buddy for a child with special needs. Serve during regularly scheduled church services and/or special events.

  • Volunteer to deliver Christmas gifts to families touched by disability.

  • Volunteer for hospital/home visits.
